How I’m wired; PS: I just got hired!
Posted by trae_z on December 20th, 2007
It’s just come up to over a year since my mum passed away. So first things first: rest in eternal peace mum.
One of the best examples I’ve ever come across in my life of nepotism/the-power-of-connections/long-leg/man-know-man sadly pertains to my recent job offer; “Nigeria we hail thee”! It came kind of instantly, from the least expected of places and took me by surprise. I admit for an idealist it’s not such a cool thing but at the end of the day it’s just one of those times that I have to do what’s best for me.
As my good chat buddy “Elliot Hendrix” rightly deciphered, my feeling on getting the offer can be summed up in the phrase: “she connected the dots for me to call the shots”.
As at now the Job’s not really my ideal and I’ll still be on the look out for something better but there’s no denying that I’ll now be better occupied and the steady income that comes with the job will lift my spirits tremendously. That’s highly welcomed considering the fact that over the past 3 years I’ve grown into an excessively sober person very much unlike the fun carefree dude I used to be. So let me get back into the spirit with this, albeit in a very swift manner:

Inspired by Tiona’s “Who I Am”
I’m Nigerian by origination
Twenty four by age
A liberal Christian by inclination
A mere mortal in a cage
A football lover essential(ly)
All things music is my balm
Web 2.0 Intellectual
Fun loving young man with a charm

VERSE ONE
When I 1st decided to get into the rap scene
I had dreams of being in covers of magazines,
Awards, accolades, and of course the dough
But I’m fully awake now, still the bread no show!
Back to the very harsh rea-lity on ground…
Investing in music doesn’t appear to be sound
I know this is over flogged but I‘ll still say it
The more wack u are the more u seem to eat
The industry appears deaf to real lyrics and hip hop
Give them sing-songs and u’ll be headed straight off to the top
Bull**** gets to the media and sells like haywire
Leaving the real heads stranded wit works with no buyer!
I want to walk away from it all b4 I explode
My writing skills are better but sales are on still mode!
I guess its time to look 4 a regular 9 - 5
And create something stable for my ponies and my wife!
VERSE TWO
When I get shows, it takes hassles to get paid
Ask me; is this how superstars are made?
Screw the popularity if it’s not feeding me
Instead of hailing me on the streets please buy my CD!
Ok? We have to learn to always hold our own
The talents are homegrown and strictly 4 this zone
After all is said and done Naija is still our home
So why not pay me enough to at least get a decent phone?
I stay awake every nite of my life to write
It’s the only way left to make my future right
I can’t sit around and wait for government welfare
Now with the rot in Showbiz, there’s a lot to fear!
Remember, I’m young, restless blood in my veins
I can’t say where the wind will blow if this struggle is in vain
Now do I need to tell u idiots how to behave?
Or do I blast this piece and send us all to the grave?!(boom!)
VERSE THREE
Tell me, is hip hop all about gyrating naked women
Champagnes and orgies, and letting loose our demons?
of course thats not what the culture is about
We preach attitude, black hoods, power and clout.
They say the world we living in is self destruct
But we can reverse the curse if in God we trust
Wut does my kid watch when he tunes to MTV Base
Stuff that makes a young fella get debased?
Don’t show my daughter that every girl is a hoe and cheap
I want the kinda songs that makes her whole and deep.
Hip hop is education infact it’s a religion
The same has to operate in every black nation!
I’m not trying to preach like a holier than thou
But the future can only be changed by controlling the now!
I’m signing out hoping that wut I said made an impact
Step out and spread the message by playing your part!!!

yea… Trae ma dude

no doubt this country needs ur type
and b4 i 4get…thanx 4 the hype
so sorry 4 ur ma’s demise
u’ll c her again when our souls rise
kip ur hed up and the dreams alive
and while u at it, marry urself a wife
a good one that will build u a home
a nest 2 settle 2 afta ur spirits roam
b4 i run out of words like a dictionary’s my house
ii’ll tell u, ur blog makes it fun weneva i browse
below is wut i feel about the situation of hip hop
so this is a convenient place 4 me to stop…
big ups bro…one love!!!
wish u the best 4rm the MAN above.

@MASSAI: the supposed response when someone rhymes a comment is to rhyme back. I’m not quite up to it now but your comments were heart felt. the respect is reciprocal…mutual respect ish. keep your head up, we’ll get there.
make i represent small with this sms i sent to a couple of friends on Feb 14th (valentine and NYSC POP day):
you’ve reached an important milestone in your life today/
congrats man(girl), the NYSC months will surely pay/
i hope you also know that you mean a lot to Trae/
peace, love and respect…use a condom if you lay/
